Eerie Publications was a slapdash publisher of black-and-white horror-anthology comics magazines, spearheaded by Myron Fass and Martin Goodman in the 1960’s and 1970’s.

Despite (or perhaps thanks to) the careless and exploitative manner in which their horror comics were produced, the results are uniquely singular — nobody else in the publishing field was quite as insane as Eerie.

As a kid growing up in the ’70’s, I was both repulsed and attracted to their garish covers and lurid stories. This childhood fixation has led to some unexpected and interesting projects as an adult to be sure, ranging all the way from animated short films to hardback book design to album art to vomit bags.

The Cast of Eerie Publications perform the Johnson-Smith Novelty Company Horror Record
This lurid mess is a short film that I made around Halloween of 2010. It marries the audio from what is probably the WorstBest horror record I own (mail ordered from a comic book ad when I was 8) with visuals culled from the crude and gruesome cover art favored by the company that gave me nightmares as a child, Eerie Publications.

No, no — don’t thank me. I’m just doing my job.

The Worst of Eerie Publications – Book Design and Layout
Featuring 21 Eerie Publications stories collected and meticulously restored by horror comics historian Mike Howlett, I was responsible for the cover design, interior layout and general production of this entry into the Yoe Books “Chilling Archives of Horror Comics” series.

Though Eerie Publications are probably best known for their gruesome and over-the-top cover images, the focus here is on the actual story contents, which feature the artwork of Chic Stone, Dick Ayers, Domingo Mandrafina and many others.

A 148 page hardcover with varnished endpaper and cover details,”The Worst Of Eerie Publications” was the 2014 Ghastly Award Winner for Best Archival Collection.
